How often do you get outside and go for a walk? Most days our schedules are filled with sedentary activity such as sitting at a desk, working on a computer, etc. I am sure we could all admit that we could spend less time on our phones too. It's important to get our body moving and breath in some fresh air.

Walking is form of low impact fitness, but it is also lifestyle habit that you can get started today!

Focus on starting the habit.

To get started, I wouldn't worry about how many steps you should take when first starting out. I would rather you start with consistency. Only have 5-10 minutes? Great! Any amount of time is better than nothing at all, and you will still come back feeling refreshed. The more you get out and get moving the more it becomes part of your weekly routine.

Schedule and reserve time on your calendar like you would schedule an appointment.

When you schedule something on your calendar, you are more likely to follow through! Make your walk a habit based on what's best for you. Would you prefer walks at the start of you day, midday, or at the end of your day? If your schedule is packed, then it would be best to take a look at your week ahead and schedule accordingly.

Bring someone with you.

Make this an activity that you can enjoy with someone else. Not only does bringing someone along keeps you accountable, but it can also allow you to spend more quality time with your walking partner. Bring your spouse, your kids, your dog, anyone!

Benefits of walking outside:

  • low impact fitness for anyone

  • improves mental clarity

  • improves metabolism

  • releases endorphins

  • improves digestion

  • improves circulation

  • improves immune system

  • relives stress

Are you ready?

Going for a walk is a great rest day activity too! Rest days are so important, no matter what your fitness goals may be. Walking keeps your body moving without the strenuous work, allowing your body to recover.

Get outside and breath in that fresh air!
